1. Who Are You?
The first question for how to discover your purpose is, “Who are you?” Now, when I ask this, I don’t mean your name! I mean, what comes to mind when you ask yourself this question? Some may describe themselves in terms of emotions e.g. “I’m a happy person,” or, “I’m a bitter person.” Others may describe themselves by what they do e.g. “I’m a lawyer.” Or some may define themselves according to their values, “I help people.”
What are the first things that come to mind when you ask yourself who you are? Take a moment to think through the first few things that pop into your head.
2. What Do You Love To Do?
What are the things you can do better than anyone else? What things make you feel like you’re in the zone and time passes by without you even noticing? Everyone has something that they’re good at. It might not be something you’ve ever considered doing full time. It might be a hobby or something you did as a child. What do you love to do?
3. Who Do You Do This For?
Everyone is motivated by someone. This could be yourself, your children, a spouse, a parent. You were put on this earth to help someone. Often we have a driving force (or person) that makes us want to be and do better. If this person is yourself, then that’s absolutely fine! Have a think – who do you do it for?
4. What Do They Need?
Now you know who you are doing this for, it’s time to really understand what they need. For example, if you are doing this for your children, what do they need? Financial security? A better world? A cleaner environment? Equality? Legacy? Be crystal clear. What do they need?
5. How Will They Change?
As a result of you doing what you do, how will these people change as a result? I like to use the word, ‘transform’. How will these people transform as a result of you fulfilling your purpose? Remember that if there is no transformation, then you haven’t fulfilled your purpose.
