How To Improve Work Life Balance in 2022
“Son, the key to life is balance.” That’s what my Uncle taught me as a teenager. The only problem was, he never taught me how to achieve it! It’s a new year and for many the need to change is more prominent than ever. At the time of writing, in the UK it’s the first day back to work and people are already bombarded by emails, “urgent” requests and more. It looks like another late night in the office. The need for work life balance is paramount. As a business coach, I believe you can achieve a good work life balance and I always coach my clients to work on both areas of their life. In this post, I will show you practical ways on how to improve work life balance in 2022. Ready? Let’s dive right in!

Clearly Define The Boundaries
One of the reasons why your work life balance sucks is because the boundaries are blurred. What I mean by this is that there is no definite time and place for work and life. Let’s look at time first…
Time
Do you have set hours for work? Or do you work around the clock? Work time should be clearly defined in your mind and in practice. My clients often say to me that we live in an ‘always-on’ world. My response – it’s only ‘always-on’ if you let it be.
Setting work times is good and healthy. If you don’t set the boundary then your work will overrun your life. It is right now, isn’t it? Otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this post. Set clear defined times for work.
Equally, set clear defined times for your home life. Let your family know what your work times are. Let’s say your work day begins at 0800 and finishes at 1800, then they know that family time can begin at 1801. Your family will understand that you need to work, but it’s not fair for them not to know the rules of engagement.
My clients also know that I have clearly defined time boundaries. They know I only check and respond to emails twice a day. They know I don’t respond on a weekend. They know I don’t respond after 1800. They might not like it, but they respect it.
Place
Some of my clients work from bed, in the living room or the kitchen. But these are places for your personal life – not your work life! The boundaries are unclear. Set defined areas for work and for your home life.
Like most people, I have a home office. That’s where I work. My laptop doesn’t leave there unless I am going out. The rest of the house is for my personal life. The kitchen is where we eat and catch up on the day, the living room is for watching tv and reading. The bedroom is for sleeping. No work will happen in these rooms in my house! Why? Because the boundaries have been clearly defined.
Set A Morning Routine
If like most people, you can’t find enough hours in the day, then create some room. Having a solid morning routine has helped my clients all over the world to be happier, more productive and achieve more in less time.
There’s a magic that happens when you wake up before the world does. These are the golden hours when the world is still, no notifications are coming in and you have time to think and get things done.
A good morning routine will focus on these areas:
- Health / Exercise
- Mindfulness / Self Care
- Self Development
- Goals
This holistic routine will set you up for the day, centre you and out you in a better frame of mind. Your stress will reduce and you’ll be in a better frame of mind for your personal time. You’ll be ‘present’.

Take Time For Yourself
Further to the above, self care is paramount in striking that work life balance. If you don’t take care of yourself (your mental and physical health) then you won’t be good in either your work or personal life. Once your mental health declines then you start to withdraw and isolate from both areas.
Take up a hobby, rediscover old passions, read, walk, paint, catch up on those tv shows that everyone was talking about years ago. Do something that makes you happy and fulfilled. If you don’t have a hobby – find one! Here’s some ideas:
- Paint
- Lean to dance
- Learn a language
- Learn to play an instrument
- Read books
- Read comic books
- Take an art class
- Do gardening
- Start knitting
- Do jigsaws
- Build Lego
- Collect vinyl records
- Bird watch
There’s a whole world out there. Do something!
Get A Coach
You might think that people don’t need a coach for this type of thing. But my client list would beg to differ! This is one of the top things I help my clients with. The reason is that work life balance ins’t so easy to achieve. You need someone to help you and guide you along the way. More than that, you need someone to be accountable to.
We can all set plans and make a start. But who is there to pick you up when it falls apart. A good coach will help you to define the boundaries and keep you on the right track.
