Tip: Do A Brain Dump
Your brain is not designed to carry things. Your brain is meant to think things through. When you’re overwhelmed, your thoughts are running around your mind in a chaotic loop. The thing to do in this situation is to get those thoughts out of your head. The best way to do this is something called a Brain Dump.
A Brain Dump is simply a method of getting things out of your head. Go somewhere quiet and free from distractions. Get rid of the phone and turn the tv off. Either sit in silence or have relaxing calm instrumental music playing in the background. Then take a piece of paper and a pen and just write.
The aim is to do stream of consciousness writing i.e. just write whatever pops in your head. It won’t make sense but that’s ok. Don’t judge what you’re writing. Just write! By writing down freely whatever pops into your head, you’ll be emptying your head of all the thoughts are swimming in there.
This exercise has helped many of my clients to clear their heads and be able to process and solve whatever is causing them to feel overwhelmed. Go ahead, give it a try!
